Transcript
[The episode opens with a close-up of the front of Jake Fischer's damaged car, its left side still has traces of deerskin and its headlight is broken, as he drives along a forest road at night. The shot cuts to the sign of the Mountain Air Motel. Jake's stops his car in front the motel and steps out. In a dark corner next to the lobby entrance, a speck of light can be seen. Jake walks to the entrance but stops when he notices that there is something in the dark corner. A cigarette is thrown from the corner and Sam Smith steps out from the dark]
Sam Smith: You Jake?
[Jake nods. Inside the lobby, Sam enters, followed by Jake. A boy, Daniel, is sitting behind the counter. Jake notices a collection of hunting rifles and guns displayed on one of the walls. Daniel gives his father a key]
Sam Smith: Toilet backs up, jiggle the handle. Card machine's down, so it'll have to be cash.
[Sam notices Jake staring at the firearm collection]
Sam: Pay up on time.
Jake Fischer: [Nodding] You bet.
[There is a brief shot of the woods. Outside the motel lobby, Sam walks along with Jake]
Jake Fischer: Is it always this quiet out here? What did you do? Get rid of all the critters in the woods?
[Sam stops by the entrance of room number 7 and looks back at Jake]
Sam Smith: It's the quiet ones you need to worry about.
[Sam unlocks the door and hands the key to Jake, who responds with a nod. Jake enters the room and closes the door. He lies down on his bed and closes his eyes. The camera lingers on the ceiling fan above, spinning slowly, before returning to Jake. A strange noise is heard, which wakes him up. Jake gets up, walks over to the window and opens the curtains, revealing that it is already daylight. The scene cuts to Jake driving through town while listening to music on the radio.]
Pat Maine: [on the radio] This is Pat Maine on KBF-FM.
[As he listen to the radio, Jake gazes out the window at the town]
Pat Maine: Some people have asked me "What's the big deal about Deerfest?". I think that this sums it up. It's about friendship and community.
[At the Oh Deer Diner, Rose is watching an interview of Alan Wake on her laptop]
Alan Wake: Yeah, that's mainly what the book is all about.
[Jake enters the diner. Rose walks over to him]
Jake Fischer: Still here?
Rose Marigold: Always.
Jake Fischer: You ever sleep?
[Rose shakes her head. Ellen Adams, sitting at one of the tables behind Rose, waves at Jake]
Rose Marigold: I wondered why she was wearing makeup.
[Jake walks over to the table. Ellen stands up, with a smile on her face]
Ellen Adams: Hey!
Jake Fischer: [extending his hand] It's great to see you again.
Ellen Adams: [trying to hide her disappointment as she shakes his hand] Great to see you too. Sit.
[The two sit]
Jake Fischer: How are things?
Ellen Adams: The same. Please don't ask me about the weather. How's Libby?
Jake Fischer: Good. You know, the same.
Ellen Adams: Well, which is it? Good, or the same?
[Jake does not answer]
Ellen Adams: Forget it, don't answer. You're here for business.
Jake Fischer: Yes... the standard 'below the fold puffery'.
Ellen Adams: Well, what did you expect? It's Bright Falls.
[Jake nods before his attention turns to a blonde woman at the table behind them who is laughing loudly. Then he looks at a man with a long beard drinking coffee at the bar]
Jake Fischer: You know, I never figured out why you moved here.
Ellen Adams: No, I guess not.
[Jake looks at her in confusion. Ellen's phone starts to vibrate. She takes a look at it]
Ellen Adams: You know, I've actually got to run... deadlines.
Jake Fischer: Oh!
Ellen Adams: If you need me, you know where to find me?
Jake Fischer: Sure.
Ellen Adams: It's great to see you again.
[Ellen extends her hand to give Jake a handshake]
Jake Fischer: You too.
[Ellen leaves, leaving Jake perplexed. The scene cuts to a shot of the fireplace in the Cauldron Lake Lodge. Jake walks over to the reception]
Jake Fischer: Hi. Jake Fischer. Here to see Dr. Hartman?
Receptionist: [takes a look at a notebook in the desk] Go right in.
[At Dr. Hartman's office, Jake is setting up his camera. The doctor walks in]
Jake Fischer: Dr. Hartman! [gives him a handshake] Jake Fischer.
Emil Hartman: [looking at Jake's camera] What have you got there?
Jake Fischer: That's my camera. I use it to record interviews, if that's OK.
Emil Hartman: You're a writer, aren't you?
Jake Fischer: Yeah.
Emil Hartman: So... write.
[Jake stares at Dr. Hartman, confused. The scene cuts to him writing on a notepad "Dr. Hartman" and underlining it]
Jake Fischer: So maybe you could start by telling me what inspired your book, 'The Creator's Dilemma'.
Emil Hartman: For years, I dealt with patients who seemed lost - trapped in a reality of their own devising.
[Jake writes on his notepad]
Emil Hartman: Can you imagine?
Jake: [shakes his head]
Emil Hartman: Neither could I. Until I began to think of their dilemma as the universal one.
[As Dr. Hartman speaks, Jake sees the picture of a road in a forest and becomes transfixed by it. Dr. Hartman, noticing this, stops talking. There is a close-up of Jake's right eye followed by a series of visions: Rose Marigold stands up with a smile; the collision of the deer with Jake's car; a pair of human hands digging frantically into a reddish soil; a dead rabbit; the blonde woman from the diner, now with a feral expression, locked behind bars; a flare being light up in the dark; a sugar cube turning brown as it is held on a cup of coffee; a barefoot man running in the woods; a deer head sinking beneath water. There is another shot of Jake's eye]
Emil Hartman: [off-screen] ...is really just about people.
[Jake is now at the lodge lobby along with Dr. Hartman]
Emil Hartman: [extends his hand] Nice chatting, Jake.
[Jake, confused, shakes his hand. Dr. Hartman walks away, but stops]
Emil Hartman: If you need anything else for your article, let me know.
[Dr. Hartman leaves and Jake looks at his surroundings in confusion. The scene cuts to Jake driving away in his car as he calls Hal.]
Hal (voice message): Hey, this is Hal. Leave a message. [Beep sound]
Jake Fischer: Hey Hal, I uh, I don't know what happened, I uh...
[Jake notices that his notepad is written and takes it out of his bag. As he drives, he takes a look at the pages. The third one features strange scribbles and the drawing of a decapitated deer head. Jake takes a quick look down the road; there is a man walking along the side of the road. Jake grabs the notepad and gives it a closer look before he looks back at the road and sees the man carrying a decapitated deer head. He then sees as his car enters a dark tunnel]
